I’ve been really down all week. The Fourth of July sorta brought me out of it for a bit, but then Wednesday I just slept the day away. Today, I didn’t even crawl out of bed until 11. We haven’t been approved for a loan extension, and I think the builder is mad at us. We just didn’t want this dream to turn to a nightmare. I’m so over all of this. We’ve been without a house for a year now.
Husband thought he’d be doing me some favors having me work on more of the “design” side and figure out the finals for siding materials, the texture I wanted of the boards, etc. It was nice in theory. We need up bickering.
I went through and measured the trim that would be needed around each window, and gave him that calculation. I told him to be mindful that I won’t be ok with seams being in the middle of a run anywhere on the windows, and to keep it to a minimum elsewhere. I was told, doors and windows. Cool.
He prices everything out and tells me we need 38 boards of trim. How can that be?! That would cover, one wall maybe? I asked him if he was counting all corner trim and the extra I requested near the soffits. No. He thought that was in my measurement. Ugh, we aren’t even speaking the same language anymore.
How do Chip and Joanna work together?!
Plumbing & Electrical
We thought we were saving money on siding for 30 seconds. Tomorrow after we get some rest, that will probably disappear. Plumbing starts tomorrow, and electrical this Saturday. I spray painted the areas where the floor outlets are going. I accidentally painted my wrist trying to pry the cap off. Honestly I’m super shocked it didn’t get on my nice blouse given how the day has gone. Those are both over budget and we are coming to the table with about $10k out of pocket between the two. Bye, bye dollars.
Cabinets & Countertops
By some MIRACLE, I managed to work the countertops for the house in to the redonkulously low line item we were given. I really do get my stone for the price of what apparently was to be laminate. It just took buying some lower groups than originally planned. It’s still something I can live with for a really long time and not cringe every time I walk in to the kitchen.
The cabinetry, however, wasn’t so lucky. I ended up selecting a no-name vanity from Houzz for the master bath, and some lower end cabinets for the mudroom. We basically have decided that room will be the first to get a makeover in a year or two. Man, the remodel list is already growing and we are still building the house!
I had a budget of $18,000 for flooring. I always thought this seemed so low. IT WAS. Turns out, contractor didn’t think the basement was being finished at the time of build (even though ALL paperwork indicates this). This also counts for the loft. So, in essence, I am trying to get nice flooring for 5000sf when I have a budget for 2200sf. No wonder I’m losing my mind.
I had my heart set on thick plank hickory for the main part of the house. The flooring was easy to find. The stair treads, and flush vents for HVAC were so out of this world expensive I couldn’t handle it. I still had to pull money out of nowhere for tile that didn’t suck! We went shopping for flooring, and I think we’ve shifted to a white oak option. It’ll still grab some color to bounce off that black cabinetry I already have here, but it’s not the same. I wanted the grain lines of hickory along with the color. I’m a dreamer.
I bought some marble tiles on clearance at Floor & Decor for the master bath, so that is a sigh of relief. That do make my heart pitter patter! I need to get back and grab the shower wall tiles before they discontinue. Uggg, more math.
I have this perfect vision of the end game of this house design. But wow is it a lot of work to get it there! I’ve made a lot of concessions already, so it’s a game of high end and low end things now to generally get some farmhouse character in.
Do your best and forget the rest, am I right? My coffee has worn off and it’s time for some Immupro induced zzzz’s. Take care, my friends!
