I’ve been a bit contemplative lately about the amount of waste we have been creating. Our new digs don’t have recycling capabilities, and that’s sucky. In the last house, my two large recycle cans would be full by the time recycle came every two weeks, but we could get a long while with just the waste bin before it needed to head to the curb.
Aside from the potential health issues of store bought deodorant, the packaging isn’t always recyclable in my area. I’ve been playing with my own mixture using four ingredients, and it’s a snap to throw together!
This little recipe makes up a 4 ounce jar. I highly recommend these amber jars with the spatula. Just make sure you don’t accidentally throw away the labels or spatulas. I *may* have done that once.
If you prefer not to get your hands dirty, I’ve used these for gifts, and they’re pretty great too!
If kept in a cool, dry, dark place, this will last you a few months!
OK, so ingredients.
I use Organic Coconut oil, Aluminum Free Baking Soda, Arrowroot Powder, and Essential Oil.
I get as much as I can in bulk, such as the coconut oil. I got two jars super cheap and I can reuse the glass later.
Arrowroot Powder can be a challenge for me to find in bulk since I live rural. I don’t know *why* it’s not super popular out here! I use it in place of cornstarch in cooking, and it’s an awesome thickening agent for deodorant. I get mine as an add-on to my Prime addiction here.
There is conflicting information out there on whether aluminum in deodorants or antipersperients contributes to breast cancer. Quite frankly, I’m not going to risk it. So, I buy aluminum free baking soda. Every so often I find a score at Costco in large amounts, but it isn’t a regular treasure find. OH! Also, while I’m thinking about it, there’s a big difference between deodorant and antiperspirant. I believe my body is made to sweat and it’s a part of healthy functioning, so this is purely deodorant. You still will sweat, you just won’t scare away everyone around you!
I’m a big, BIG fan of Bergamot essential oil. It smells citrusy and has a whole crapload of good things it can do. It can support healthy skin, especially if oily. I find the scent to be very uplifting! Love, love this stuff!
2TB coconut oil, melted
2TB aluminum free baking soda
2TB arrowroot powder
20-25 drops essential oil of your choice, I use Bergamot. (Feel free to email me if you’re interested in Young Living’s EO’s!) Just PLEASE make sure it’s therapeutic grade and safe to put on your body. READ THOSE LABELS!
First add baking soda and arrowroot in a small mixing bowl. I just use a cereal bowl and stir that baby up!
Next up, add in your essential oil!
Stir oil drops in evenly, and pour in to your container! If you’re in a really warm climate (or a sardine box camper cooking in the sun) make sure to put in cook dark place or the refrigerator.
Note that this mixture should be doubled if you are using a deodorant container. I chose to get away from those because of the trash issue, and I like to keep my recipes short term to ensure they are fresh, like me!
