I promised myself I’d start making clothes instead of buying them. Project “Sew My Style” is a sew along aimed at bringing awareness to the slow fashion movement. What the heck is the “slow fashion movement?!” Slow Fashion is the movement of designing, creating, and buying garments for quality and longevity. It encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste. (cite) I’m so excited!
I’ll be able to customize the fabrics to allow me to make them fit my lifestyle and homestead chores list. Even better, it gives me a chance to buy organic fabrics, and really put the intention in to my wardrobe instead of just buying something on a whim (hey, that takes away from my “me” budget!). I have a horrible habit of buying clothes that I don’t love, they spark no joy, and I feel like a frumpy mess when I wear them. No more!
I still intend of keeping my denim jeans, because they’re practical for working in, and also a great marker for whether or not I’m gaining a few jiggles where I shouldn’t be. Jeans never really go out of style do they?! But let’s face it, I have nearly no need for my fancy schmancy dresses and suits from my law firm working days. They take up space and collect dust. They are dry clean only. I hate driving to the dry cleaner. Not happening.
There are a few patterns that are planned in this sew along that are just not my style whatsoever! Rather than skip that month, I plan on doing substitutions with an item that is similar in nature. I haven’t really planned that far ahead yet, because luckily, January’s item is totally awesome!
I need to budget for additional fabrics after the first quarter. My plan and it’s totally do-able if I kick the coffee habit in time to save up my “me” money for fabric. Organic fabrics are tough to find in person so I often have to order online, sight unseen or order swatches and hope it’s in stock when I’m ready to buy. Fabrics will need to be excellent quality, so that they last with the messes I make cooking, gardening, and taking care of various animals.
I really can’t wait to show you what I make this year! Loves and hugs! xoxo
